The holiday season is supposed to be joyous and filled with fun. However, sometimes the holiday season becomes stressful for many people. Unfortunately, these stressors can lead to domestic violence situations.
Past holiday seasons have shown an increase in domestic violence incidents, often leaving family and friends traumatized with feelings of emptiness and fear; feelings that continue into the New Year.
Causes for the increased violence during the holiday season include: financial constraints, employment issues, housing issues, and substance abuse. Many times the domestic violence initiators refuses to take responsibility for their actions and place the blame on the victim.
Some warning signs of potentially abusive and life-threatening situations during the holidays include:
- Financial pressures
- Physical fatigue
- Illness
- Escalating arguments
- Conflict avoidance
- Increased restlessness
- Agitation
- Feelings of being controlled or lacking control
Be on the alert if any of the above signs are visible. If possible, discuss the situation in a calm manner without yelling or calling your partner names or putting them down. Avoid alcohol or any substance that may alter your mental state. If assaulted, seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to the police.
Just remember, domestic violence is not just a holiday season issue. Awareness of this potentially tragic issue is a MUST all year long.
